ECO Infoca Firemen RestingThe Infoca fire-fighters didn’t get much of a rest after last summer owing to out-of-season fires but they’re ready to go again now.

The fire season stretches from now until the 15th of October meaning that they will be on alert and ready to go at a moment’s notice, day or night.

To be able to carry out the task in our province, they have 667 personnel, 180 vehicles (personnel transport, fire trucks and water bowsers) and seven aircraft; that’s one helicopter more than last year.

The budget set aside for Infoca is greater this year, too – 24m euros, which is 300,000 euros more. These funds are not just for putting fires out, but probably more importantly, preventing them in the first place by keeping the mountain firebreaks clear of vegetation and the woodlands free of excessive undergrowth. We’re talking about 1,000 square hectares of land. In fact, this prevention work accounts for nearly half of the budget (11.7m euros)

So, Ladies and Gentlemen, when you have the aircon going full tilt and being outside in the sun is unbearable with more clothes than a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, spare a thought for these men and women who will be facing walls of flames, fully togged out in helmets, fire-proof jackets and trousers, suffering not only the heat that you will find on the streets, but the super-charged heat of advancing flames with a height of a block of flats.
