As from September, the start of the new 2019-2020 school year, two Almuñécar schools will have the facilities to provide school dinners for their students.
Both Río Verde and Virgen de la Antigua have had the builders in to create dining rooms and kitchens for both establishments. Now, with the work all but complete, notices have been sent out to parents that they will be ready to start serving up!
The move is the result of the parents associations and management of both schools, along with the Town Hall.
Our own 9-year old is at Rio Verde and the parents are extremely pleased with the move, which will enable them to better reconcile family and work obligations, whilst knowing their children are in a safe environment and, of course, being fed.
The mayor of Almuñécar, Trinidad Herrera, said that the project had been a joint effort, “The Town Hall, both schools, the educational community in general and the parents associations have all had a hand in this project coming to fruition.” She went on to say, “anything that results in improving the welfare of our children will always have our support and commitment.”
The Town Hall were responsible for the building costs which amounted to €111,743.50, with €48,600 corresponding to Río Verde with the building work carried out between the two playgrounds and €37,437.05 for Virgen de la Antigua where the building work involved converting a classroom.
With the Town Hall feeling generous with their budgets (could there be elections looming?), they also threw a budget of €25,706.45 at the kitchen area of La Noria de Los Marinos which received some much needed improvement work.
The Councillor for Urban Planning and Public Works, José Manuel Fernández, said that the work at the two schools is “one of the tasks that means a lot to me, as I know that the parents associations (AMPAS) and teachers have been asking for this for 12 years and now, thanks to this project and the help of all involved, it will now be a reality.”
