A road accident in Cuba on Thursday afternoon involving a bus with 40 people on board, amongst them a family from Almuñécar, resulted in seven deaths.

Of the 40 passengers, 22 were foreigners. Amongst the dead are two argentinean women, a Frenchman and a German woman, according to the Cuban newspaper, Diario de Cuba.

According to the list of names published by the Venceremos newspaper, the Argentineans are Roxana Laseda (35) and Nadis Carolina Flores (35) The Frenchman was Patrick Demer Tesseran (67) and the German woman, Annegret Frieda Gohike (59). Three Cubans, workers with Empresa Geysel also died.

The other 33 people on board were injuried to varying degrees, amongst them two children, one of who was a foreign tourist.

Five passengers were seriously injured; three Cubans, the Spanish woman Felicita Hurtado Mujica (42) and the Frenchwoman Marline Alphonse (63).

The accident occurred not far from the US base of Guantánamo, involving a bus belonging to the Viazul bus company, which was on route from Baracoa for La Habana. According to some witnesses the driver lost control of the bus whilst overtaking resulting in the bus turning over.

The other 22 foreign tourists came from the Netherlands, the UK, France, Mexico, Canada an Argentina.

This was the second accident involving a bus in a week: on the 8th there was a collision between a bus and a train producing a dozen people injured.

Editorial comment:  It is not clear whether the seriously injured Spanish woman, Felicita H. M, (46), her husband, Luis Manuel (50) and their child Flavio Luis (3), are from Almuñécar, although on national TV an Almuñécar family was mentioned. Hopefully there will be more information tomorrow.
