The Lost Fleet

LHR ShipwreckToday is the 456th anniversary of the foundering of the Spanish fleet in La Herradura bay during the reign of Philip II.

There has been a ceremony this morning to mark the occasion; a disaster that saw 25 galleys go to the bottom and claim 5,000 lives – the fleet had taken shelter in the bay from a storm, anchored in the lee of the wind. However the wind veered and pushed the fleet up against the rocks.

The ceremony, which counted on the participation of all the local school children, took place on Calle Obispo (old town).

As part of this public act, the younger schoolchildren from the junior school were given a class on navigation and positioning by Windsurf La Herradura.

There will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the shipwreck monument on the beach with members of the Servicio Marítimo de la Guardia Civil attending.

Finally, tonight at a dinner put on by the Asociación Amigos de La Herradura there will be a homage to mariners.
