Lung Cancer Breakthrough

Spanish medical researchers have come up trumps thanks to a pioneering treatment for treating cancer of the lung.

Using chemotherapy and immunotherapy before surgery they have managed cancer remission for this type of tumour in 80% of the cases.

The researchers, who belong to the Grupo Español de Cáncer de Pulmón (GEPC) included 46 patients from 25 different hospitals around as part of a study entitled Nadim. The preliminary results were presented at the World Caner Congress, which was held in Toronto.

Until now, such patients are given chemotherapy but response is low and very few are operated upon. In fact, only 35% survive the first five years, according to the GECP.

Lung cancer is the most deadly tumour and represents 20.5% of all cancer deaths in Spain. Put another way, 21,200 Spaniards die every year from this kind of cancer (82% males & 17% females).
