Motril Market Overhaul

Motril received a grant from the Junta last month worth 735,000 euros for the renovation of the Mercado Municipal de San Agustín.

Together with 240,000 from the municipal coffers and another 100,000 for changing the flooring, the market will have just over a million euros to turn the problem-beset municipal building into a modern market.

The windows and doors will be changed and an ‘intelligent’ more economical lighting system will illuminate the goods on sale.

“Until now, in the summer it was too hot inside and too cold in the winter, with a dangerous floor that caused many people to slip and fall,” explained the Mayor, Flor Almón, promising, “all this will change.”

She pointed out that the key to this will be solar-power panels which will provide thermal energy for heating and hot water for use in the stalls.

The upper floor will be open to businesses that wish to set up gourmet stalls. Some 400,000 of the budget will go on renovating and adapting this space to that purpose. This idea is to bring more people into the market; not just shoppers.

Another part of the project does not entail the building itself, but its surroundings; i.e., the Plaza de la Tenería with the object of restoring it to its former popularity as a social point.

The renovation work will be completed in eleven months time, in June 2019 – work won’t commence until after this summer.
