Axarquia’s Animal Shame

AXA Animal CrueltyThe environmental branch of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) have uncovered yet another case of animal cruelty, this time involving dozens of dogs in Axarquia. The police acted in Benajarafe and Torrox after investigating three separate cases of animal cruelty.

The first was in Benajarafe after the Vélez-Málaga Guardia post received a tip-off about a dog; a German Shepherd. They found the dog, which was “extremely thin” and very weak, so much so that it could not stand up. It had several open wounds which were infected with magots. The 8-year-old animal, which was lying in its own excrement, was also infested with ticks.

Their investigation turned up that it had been ill for at least 15 days. Unfortunately, although they took it straight to a vet, there was no other option other than to put it down owing to its suffering.

The second case was handled by the Nerja Guardia Civil where in nearby Torrox they came across 30 dogs in a cortijo. All of them were in a bad condition and had been plainly abandoned by their owner.

The Nerja police also investigated another case in Torrox where they found seven dogs, five of which were locked up in two pens, full of their own excrement. Again the police considered that they had been abandoned by their owner. The other two dogs were loose and showed obvious signs of starvation. One of them had one of its hind legs amputated. It is not known if the amputation had been carried out by a vet.
