Motril started the year with a fire near Barrio de Santa Adela (port area) and another nearby on the Camino de Minasierra.
Although neither fire resulted in injuries, 30 people had to be evacuated as a precaution during the night of New Year’s Eve.
The first call came in at 00.27h – in other words, just under half an hour into the new year – but over a score more were to come in from alarmed residents. Callers were reporting a fire on a piece of wasteland next to the Rambla de las Brujas.
Houses on Calle Balandro were evacuated because of the dense smoke; not because of any danger of the flames reaching them.
The Motril fire service soon had both of the fires under control, deploying six vehicles, whilst Protección Civil and police officers organised the temporary evacuations.
The Councillor for Citizen Safety, María Ángeles Escámez, thanked the emergency services for their rapid response and professional work.
