Owing to the fact that the Catalán Regional Police have failed to act, the Guardia Civil and Policía Nacional have moved in to evict voters and voting officials from the occupied schools.
A total of 6,000 police reinforcements were stripped from their normal provincial bases and moved to Cataluña. They are being housed in several cruise ships/ferries docked in the ports of Barcelona and Tarragona.
One of the ships has had its sides painted with huge drawings of Tweety Pie and Daffy Duck, much to the amusement of social-media users.
A police spokesman has announced that they are acting not against those wishing to vote, but against illegal material and centres.
11:02h Update: The Policia Nacional have used rubber bullets to disperse crowds – a controversial point in itself, especially as the Catalán Regional Police have longed been banned from using them, so the the fact that police forces are using them in Cataluña is very questionable. It also appears that an international observer has been injured by a rubber bullet.
13:30h UpdateThere have been cases where farmers have used their tractors to block the streets leading to school in order to prevent the police from reaching them.
