This weekend saw two confirmed deaths of bathers, as well as a suspected drowning (a bather has disappeared), amongst the dead, an 89-year-old German citizen.
Saturday the 10th of June saw the death of a A 48-year-old man from Cádiz, who drowned off Playa de la Hierbabuena in Barbate (Cádiz) whilst attempting to rescue his nephew who was struggling in the water. This occurred at 15.00h. His nephew evidently survived because no mention of his death was made in the press release.
On the Playa El Palmar, in Vejer (Cádiz) at 12:15h horas, an 89-year-old German man was pulled out of the water after having apparently drowned – we say apparently because the cause of death might have been a heart attack.
And then on the same beach only hours later a 59-year-old man simple went for a swim and never came back. Since then the Guardia Civil and Policía Local have been searching for him on land whilst the lifeguard vessel Salvamar Gadir continues to comb the waters of the said beach. There is also an aircraft out looking for him, too.
Family members explained to the police that the man has the habit of taking very long swims, but of course, after so many hours they became worried as he had not returned. It was his sister that reported the disappearance to the police.
Although the surface of the sea off that beach was calm, there was a strong undertow, explained the Councillor for Beaches. There is no mention of whether there was a warning flag being flown at the time in the official press release, however.
The beach was closed the following day, Sunday the 11th.
