Broke but Honest

AND Pedro Wallet FinderA struggling immigrant from Nigeria found a wallet containing 3,000 euros in cash and 13,000 in cheques and handed it over to the police.

Nigerian born Pedro Evangeliana, who has lived in Spain for the last 15 years, makes a living from selling paper hankies at traffic lights in the Triana quarter of Sevilla. Obviously, he doesn’t make a lot from it.

Yet, regardless of how dire his earning capacity is, it didn’t stop him from deciding to do the honest thing after finding a veritable treasure trove that could have made a tremendous difference to his outlook – and nobody would have been any the wiser, except himself, that is.

The incident occurred on the 3rd of November and began when he saw a wallet on the roof of a car stopped at the lights, and when it pulled away, the wallet fell to the ground.

As most drivers think that somebody selling hankies at a traffic light are invisible, this driver took no notice of his attempts to attract his attention as he disappeared from view.

Now, handing in such a find at a police station is one thing but handing it over to two Policia Nacional in a patrol car is an act of faith, if you see what I mean.

But the wallet made its way to the police station and the owner was tracked down; a 42-year-old businessman from that city.

The owner said that he was so grateful that he wanted to personally go around and thank the man.

In the meantime, Pedro says that his neighbours think that he is nuts, yet he says that he had no other option than to hand over money that didn’t belong to him. Pedro should rule out finding a career as a politician, obviously.

Pedro was a doctor in his own country and is presently studying medicine here.

Lastly, this is not the first time that a Nigerian immigrant has handed in a bulging wallet: 24-year-old Dom Amby found and handed in a wallet in 2008 containing 2,700 euros in cash.
