Gallardón Abortion Bill Scuppered

Even the Popular Party itself could not have imagined the backlash over the controversial proposed abortion bill drafted by the Justice Minister, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón. The bill called for horrendously archaic rules to be applied to abortion, making almost impossible for a woman to abort a fetus, no matter what the circumstances.

However, the cabinet has decided to suspend the reform indefinitely. A real slap in the political face for Gallardón from his own people.

Back in July, Mr. Gallardón was confident that his abortion reform would get the green light by September, now however, sources within the government are suggesting there are no plans to progress with it anytime in the near future.

The weekly press conference following the Cabinet meeting on Friday saw the ever evasive Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Soenz de Santamaría carefully, in true politician style, avoided saying whether the reform will be scrapped completely.

“This is complicated and a very sensitive issue socially,” she explained.

The question now is whether Gallardón will step down over this issue… or will the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy ask him to resign? Unlikely, we think.

At least the rejection of the reform means that Spain won’t be dragged back 30 years overnight.
