No Surprise!

Of a total of 185 countries, Spain comes in at 136 in a list ranking where it is most difficult to start a business. Anybody that has tried to open a bar, shop or whatever business here knows just how difficult it is. Without doubt, red tape and bureaucracy in general is a wall designed to bang your head on and for all the promises to do away with ‘vuelve usted mañana,’ in essence, little has changed.

The World Bank is responsible for this evaluation, which is part of a report called Doing Business 2013, something that it has been doing for the last ten years. Singapore topped the global ranking on the ease of doing business for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Hong Kong SAR, China, New Zealand, the United States and Denmark. Georgia was a new entrant to the top 10.

Depressingly, it’s easier to start a business in the vast majorities of countries on Earth, than in Spain, which, by the way, slipped down two places since last year, so things aren’t exactly improving.

Just across the border, in Portugal, they came in 31st, and that’s even dropping back eight places since last year. Italy came in at 84 also dropping back eight slots since last year. Hell, you can even compare Spain to Albania, if you really want to get depressed, because they came in at 11th place, bless their cotton socks, after a brutal loss of one place since last year.
