El Canuelo, Maro

The Nerja Town Hall has petitioned the regional Board of Agriculture, Fishing and Environment for permission to install sunbeds and suitable shade on Playa de El Cañuelo; the beach concerned lies in a  nature park (Paraje Natural Acantilados de Maro- Cerro Gordo).

The Councillor for the Environment, Nieves Atencia, pointed out that El Cañuelo is one of the longest beaches in the park and logically has the largest number of users, and for these reasons the beach should have adequate installations for the use of bathers. She underlined the fact that beaches are one of the prime engines of the economic development of the township.

The Town Hall is aware that there is a fine balance between providing equipment for beach users whilst at the same time reducing environmental impact to a minimum in such virgin surroundings. For example, wooden walkways make both, access easier, whilst at the same time channel visitors directly to the beach and thus avoid intrusion into surrounding areas.
