Toll Roads and Death Toll

The head of the DGT (Department of Transport), María Seguí, is worried that the recent decision to put toll booths on hitherto free-to-use autovias will push the accident rate up. She considers that drivers will opt for normal roads, where 80% of traffic accidents already occur.

She also spoke about the Governments announcement about the possibility of reducing the speed limit on main roads from 100 kph down to 90 kph, as well as establish a variable speed limit on autovias and autopistas, according to road conditions at any given moment.

On a grimmer note, she also said that her department was working on getting the 350 radar traps back up and running, which have been inoperative lately because of maintenance problems. Spain has a total of 700 such systems.
