Sixteen percent of the population of Motril is diabetic, according to Encarni Martin, President of the Motril Diabetics Association. Whether this is high or low compared to other town records is not known but it certainly sounds extremely high.
Dialysis patients are now stepping up their fight to get the Motril Hospital to put in more specialist equipment and personnel to help them along with other specialist treatments that are not available at the hospital. If you are a diabetic, you could face being sent for dialysis treatment three times a week to Granada. You can imagine what pressure that puts on the individual and their families each week. Dialysis is exhausting without having the additional travel to and from Granada.
The hospital needs a specialist in Nephrology (kidney disease) as well as Neurology, Endocrinology and Rheumatology.
