Since I belong to the Almuñécar Women’s Group, I thought it might be beneficial to share information about this delightful and active group with my fellow Danish women in our area.
Thus it is appearing in the Danish Corner of this magazine, but certainly also pertains to English speaking women of all nationalities here.
The Almuñécar Women’s Group is a network of women, consisting of visitors, non-residents, and full time residents in and around the Almuñécar area, who meet twice a month at the very accessible Bar Pinball, located at Paseo de Altillo Bajo. We meet for a very social and informal coffee meeting every second Saturday of the month at 11:00 a.m. Every fourth Saturday of the month, we meet at 11:00 a.m. for a planning meeting.
There is no organizing committee in the group, so it is up to the members themselves to plan, organize and schedule events of interest. Also, there are no membership fees but some organized activities may include a cost. Most of the activities are women only, but partners and friends are sometimes invited to certain events.
The Almuñécar Women’s Group would like to extend an invitation to anyone who is interested, to attend their meetings or join their newsletter mailing list. The newsletter is sent out monthly and highlights the upcoming activities. These activities are numerous and consist of weekly events such as walks on Sundays, and Mondays include Intermediate Spanish Conversation, Aqua Aerobics as well as a Singing Group.
Tuesdays you can join in the fun of Dancing with Di, Wednesdays you can attend Beginners Spanish Classes, and Thursdays there is Line Dancing in La Herradura. On Fridays there are Pilates, Flamenco, Ceroc and Dancing Classes.
The group currently holds monthly events such Tapas Night on the first Friday of every month, Sunday Lunch at different venues, a Book Club as well as a Writers’ Group.
Other events in the past have included English-Language Films, Fitness and Yoga classes, Art Day, Plant Swap, Fundraising Events and Excursions to different places.
The group tries to arrange to meet whenever there is a musical event, art exhibition or fiesta in the area, which is wonderful for those of us who don’t like to attend these events by ourselves.
As a result of this group being formed a few years ago, some of the women are developing a support network called Connections to assist members with, for example, interpretation at hospital appointments, transportation and other ways of offering support – although this is still in the beginning stages. We are always looking for new ideas for activities so if you have suggestions, please let us know.
Attending the meetings and being on the mailing list is a great opportunity to meet other fabulous and friendly women in the area and to keep informed of upcoming activities in the surrounding area.
Approximately 20 people show up at each meeting but there are currently about 70 on the mailing list.
If you would like further information or would like to be added to the mailing list please feel free to call Sharon at 639 941 418 or email almunecarwomensgroup@googlemail.com. If you don’t have access to email, the newsletter is also available at Delfin Books located at Av. Juan Carlos I, 28 in Almuñécar.
