Obit: Jose Antonio Ruiz Aneas

Obit Jose Pub JabequeIf I say the name, José Antonio Ruiz Aneas to most foreigners living in Almuñécar, it probably wouldn’t ring a bell, but if I say Pub Jabeque, it immediately will.

Jose died Saturday, aged 52, with the news pretty much shocking everybody.

I was in Granada playing in a gig when jazz-guitarist, Carlos Martin, who was also on the same bill, came over and broke the news to our band. We couldn’t believe it. By sad coincidence the concert was in homage to a well known, Granada musician, Pablo Román, to mark the first anniversary of his death.

In Granada anybody who has every spent their holidays in Almuñécar knows Pub El Jabeque, which opened its doors in 1979, so Jose is very well known and liked up there, too.

Well, his funeral was yesterday evening and the place was packed with people wanting to give their condolences to the family.

The Jabeque was probably the last original pub left in Almuñécar from the late 70’s and early 80’s. Gone is San Tropez, gone is the Mimón, gone is the Rastro and now, gone is the beating heart of Pub El Jabeque.

Descanse en paz, Jose. Te marchaste muy pronto; demasiado pronto, dejando El Jabeque sin capitán y la noche almuñéquera sin esa sonrisa entre copas y buena música.
