The Anchor & The Roundabout

ALM San Cristobal RoundaboutAlmuñécar’s San Cristóbal road now has its latest roundabout adorned with a 2-tonne anchor, donated by Carbonell S.L.

The inauguration went ahead this Monday, right in front of Aparthotel Chinasol, where the roundabout stands.

Local artist, José Cabrera, who has worked on just about all of the beach-road roundabouts in Almuñécar and La Herradura, decorated the fountain setting on which the anchor was placed.

The anchor, which was found in a ship-building yard in Vigo by the owner of Carbonell, was chosen because of the proximity of the Barrio de Los Marinos. An Almuñécar transport company brought it down, which was fun because it stands 2.65 metres in height and 1.4 metres from blade point to blade point.

And there it will sit… until a bus or articulated lorry tries to negotiate the roundabout and ends up dragging it around town… but a damned fine, anchor-topped fountain it is.

After a long wait the San Cristobal “Fisherman” roundabout is now finished and it looks wonderful. I suppose Almunecar is rather lucky with their roundabouts.
