Mother Tries to Drown Baby

AXA Hospital Comarcal de la AxarquíaTwo policemen prevented a young mother from harming her baby yesterday afternoon around 17.45h near the Ingenio shopping centre in Vélez-Málaga.

The policemen were patrolling when they heard the sounds of several people arguing under the autovía bridge next to the said shopping centre.

Approaching, they came across the parents of the baby and its maternal grandparents. There was also a 9-year-old girl; the step-sister of the baby

The parents and the two children had been out walking together but then the 33-year-old mother started getting aggressive and threatening to harm the baby, so the father phoned his parents-in-law, warning them about their daughter’s behaviour and asking them to come quickly.

The mother had tried to throw the 15-day-old baby into an irrigation channel, running nearby. The grandparents got there in time to prevent this. The police arrived moments later, finding the commotion.

They arrested the mother and took her to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía for psychiatric assessment.

There was another incident involving a mother mistreating a baby this same week, on Monday, this time in the city of Málaga; a mother had threaten to throw her child out of a 10th-storey window whilst the police were trying to calm her down. She was arrested and the child put into temporary care.
