NRJ Belgian Hiker RescuedA young Belgian man became exhausted yesterday afternoon on the Nerja side of the Almijarras and had to be rescued.

The 22-year-old excursionist had decided to set out without sufficient water in the middle of August to explore an Andalusian mountainside.

Protección Civil de Nerja and the local fire service were called out to find and rescue him after receiving a call for help from him whilst out walking the Cuesta del Cielo.

They found him just after three in the afternoon and carried him back down on a stretcher, suffering from serious dehydration. He was taken to the Nerja medical centre for treatment.

The route he had been taking; i.e., Cuesta del Cielo, which starts just behind Nerja Caves, is a very popular one for hikers. The mountain peak from which the route takes its name (El Pico del Cielo) reaches a height of 1,500 metres above sea level, yet lies only six kilometres in a B-line from the beach, affording some magnificent views.
