MOT Greenhouses Plastic FarmingIn the latest Plenary Meeting of the Motril Town Council the move to increase greenhouse farming was approved thanks to votes in favour from the majority of political parties.

The PSOE, PA an PP voted in favour whilst the IU abstained in the setting up of a partial revision of the towns Suelo no Urbanizable (non-urban development land). This permits changes to the PGOU (General Urban Development Plan) in order to increase arable land.

The Vice Mayor, Antonio Escámez, said that when they took over the Town Hall they found a farming-land growth project that was was blocked owing to a series of objections by the Junta de Andalucia – A municipal PGOU is approved by the Junta and cannot be changed without their authorisation.

Three years down the line, says the Vice Mayor, they have overcome these administrative obstacles

“One of the problems was the attempt to legalise existing greenhouses that had been set up where they should not have,” he explained, adding, “there were also problems such as the restrictions on the height and gradient of cuttings behind greenhouses – three metres and 20% respectively.”

The Mayor, Flor Almón, considers that the projected expansion of the greenhouse sector will allow Motril to be more competitive in the sector and increase local employment.

Editorial comment: Two observations: 1) you either have tourism or you have greenhouses; 2) has there been a study on the availability of water even for existing structures, let alone future ones?
