ALM Cabra Crash Car Amongst TreesAround 15.00h yesterday afternoon a car plummeted down a scree slope, more or less opposite the roadside fountain on the Cabra road (near the abandoned gasolinera).

The helicopter activity was intense, although there was only one person in the stricken car. The Almuñécar fire service were first on the scene but the access from the road down to the car is very steep and full of loose stones.

Undeterred the rescuers were able to reach the car (a Peugeot 307 with this year’s numberplate) and get the driver out so that he could be winched up into a Guardia Civil rescue helicopter. The car had come to rest between a couple of trees amongst thick undergrowth.

ALM Cabra Accident Emergency VehiclesParts of the car were ripped off on the way down; the bumper complete with Spanish numberplate was surrounded by scattered items of clothing, all new, which had spewed out of a large chequered, plastic bag, of the type that can be bought in any one of the Chinese bazars on the coast.

There is only a small gap that the car could have plunged through, between a high rock and a stone crash barrier, no more than three metres apart. There are no skid marks on the road or collision marks on the crash barrier on the large rock, so it is not clear how the car ended up down there.

The 37-year-old driver, who is from the town of Peligros, suffered several injuries (none life threatening) and was flown to the PTS Hospital in Granada.
