MOT Illegal ImmigrantsMotril has had to open up a public building to house the illegal-immigrant overspill – the port facilities cannot keep them there after 72 hours.

The Nave de los Arcos, which is in the La Fabriquilla area of town has been used to house 70 immigrants owing to this emergency, one-off situation, explained the Councillor for Social Services, Gregorio Morales.

The immigrants, who arrived last Friday, had literally been set free after the initial holding period of 72 hours had passed in the port temporary holding centre (CATE ) and with nowhere to go owing to the main holding centres being overwhelmed, they were housed in this old sugar-factory building.

For the three days that they are expected to stay there they will be looked after by the Spanish Red Cross.

The government-run facilities are overwhelmed, the Red Cross facilities are overwhelmed, but still more illegal immigrants come.

In the meantime, immigrants that had been rescued out to sea off Italy were refused landing permission there, thanks to the policy imposed by the new coalition government, so they were taken to Malta, but as this island already has too many immigrants, they were refused landing there too.
