MOT Equo underwater protestCoinciding with World Environment Day, members of the ecologist group carried out an underwater protest concerning the health of our seabeds. This was done in collaboration with the Club Universitario de Buceo de la Universidad de Granada.

The act was basically the deployment of a banner on the seabed which read: Por la Conservación del Litoral y sus Empleos Verdes (In Defence of our Coastline and its Green Jobs). Your guess is as good as mine as to what “green jobs” refer to, but it refers to local fishermen, for example.

Equo point to the excessive urban development on the seafronts, mass tourism and industrial-scale fishing, especially the use of drag nets.

The multinational companies that use large factory fishing ships that scoop up tonnes of fish every day, without distinction to the type of fish caught in the nets and ploughing up the seabed.

Another thing that Equo wants changing is the dumping of soil onto the beaches as a regeneration measure.

They reassured the Motril fishing sector that they are in no way against fishing and support traditional fishing methods, such as those carried out by the local fishing boats. They also support the local fishing sector against EU measures that only serve to favour the “globalised economic market.”
