Beachy but far from Peachy

MOT Protests on playa de PonienteWork began down on Motril’s beaches to replenish the washed-away sand but locals are far from happy; they’re on the warpath!

Just over 70 irate locals sported banners with slogans such as “The Beach Is Ours!” whilst chanting for the Central Government to get their finger out and build the groynes or breakwaters.

What riles them most is that Costas is digging up the sand at the poor end of town and dumping it down on the beaches at the snooty end; i.e, from Playa El Cable, next to the port, to Playa Granada next to Los Moriscos Golf Club.

Furthermore, the transfer operation is going to take about a month and a half during which time the affected beaches are closed to the general public.

“We are annoyed and completely fed up of their stripping one saint to dress another,” explained one of their number. That, by the way, is a Spanish saying that translates into, more or less, robbing Peter to pay Paul and in this case refers to taking the sand from one beach to patch up another one.

And they have a point because all the effort going into patching up Playa Granada is doomed failure because with the next gale the sand will be carried away again.

There is a difference of course, because the sea transports the sand from Playa Granada to Playa El Cable for free, where as it will cost 700,000 euros to truck it back again, and again, and again.
