AND Regional ParliamentThe left-wing opposition party, Podemos in the Regional Government proposed that MPs took a cut in their salary – it was unanimously rejected by other parties.

Surprise! Surprise!

If the motion had been approved, instead of rejected out of hand by the PSOE, PP and Ciudadanos, then the 109 regional MPs would have lost extras for belonging to a parliamentary commissions even though they don’t attend them.

These MPs receive 3,040.38 euros before tax, each month, but that’s not all because just about all of them also are involved in commissions,as well as receiving travelling expenses of around 200 euros per week… even during the two months that the parliament is closed (January & August).

In fact, the Podemos MP, Teresa Rodríguez, says that on average MPs receives another 1,000 to 2,500 euros per month on top of their fixed salary. Neither do MPs have to present receipts etc to justify these expenses.

She proposed that MPs have to ‘clock in’ for commission attendance so that they only get paid for those they actually attend and that when they cease to be MPs the total received as employment adjustment be 1,400 euros instead of their full salaries per month during the adaption period.

All the other parties consider that her proposal as ‘popularism.’

Now, the MP for the PSOE pointed out that Sra Teresa Rodrígues is the highest paid Andalusian MP – more than even the Regional Prime Minister. It was Sra. Rodrígues herself who pointed out that she earns 5,617 euros before tax each month.

“Then let me earn less!” she protested after being reproached for this.

“Hers is pure hypocrisy,” said the PSOE MP, explaining, “she didn’t attend the last Board of Spokespersons yet she didn’t reject the related expense payment for it.”
