MOT Policia NacionalFortunately for one woman in Motril, an off-duty, municipal policeman came across her being mugged on a street in the north of the town and quickly acted.

It was 21.00h last Tuesday when the policeman, whilst driving, saw a man choking a woman from behind with his forearm, waiting for her to pass out so that he could take her valuables.

This mugging technique is known in Spanish as the mata leon; a hold called a ‘rear naked choke’ in English. It’s called ‘lion killer’ in Spanish because it is supposedly how Hercules choked and killed the lion.

Anyway, the policeman jumped out of the car, ran over and tackled the mugger and quickly had him immobilised on the ground. The woman, despite the encounter, was shaken but OK.

The policeman then called in a patrol to take the suspect down to the police station.

The Councillor for Citizen Safety has praised the policeman for his rapid response: “We can be rightly proud of our police force.”
