SAL Car Arson Old TownFour cars went up in flames during the early hours of yesterday in the old part of town of Salobreña; i.e., in the old market square.

A total of four vehicles were completely gutted and another four damaged by the flames.

The Motril Fire Service were called in at five in the morning to tackle the flames. They attended with two fire engines and prevented the flames from reaching other cars.

The four burnt out cars and two of the damaged ones had been parked on the upper level, which is the larger of the two levels. The other two were parked in the street that runs alongside the square. A palm tree was also damaged.

The first locals to arrive, with the intention of getting their cars out of danger, sounded the alarm with their car horns to wake other car owners up.

The car park is currently cordoned off whilst the Guardia Civil examine the area to determine the cause.

Finally, and on a different note, it is said that several houses were broken into on the same night, probably taking advantage of people being out enjoying the fiestas.
