Symbolic Blood-Stained Shoes

FP Bloodied ShoesAlmuñécar used the Day Against Gender Violence (Friday 24th) to pay homage to the 55 women and 11 minors murdered so far this year in Spain by their husbands, boyfriends or fathers.

The spot chosen was a fenced-off part of the Town Hall Square where a pair of shoes was used to represent each victim. The act was led by the Mayor and organised by pupils from the local high schools. Also present was a representative of foreign female residents, as well as staff from the Guardia Civil and Policía specialised in this sphere.

A minute’s silence was observed after the Mayor’s speech.

But Friday was just one day in a month of events to heighten awareness of this stain on society, which began on the 6th of November which have consisted of workshops, films, and talks on the subject.

Finally, in La Herradura, the high school held self-defence workshops for both girls and boys on the 29th an 30th of November.
