Damaged Ship Heads for Motril

MOT MV CheshireThe British cargo ship, MV Cheshire, which suffered a fire in its cargo hold containing fertilizer on the 12th of August off the Canary islands, will be arriving in Motril.

The ship, which had been transporting 42,654 tonnes of ammonia nitrate, is under tow and heading Motril Port so that it can be unloaded and repaired. It is expected to arrive today around 11.00h.

Soon after the fire broke out the crew were evacuated and the ship allowed to drift some 60 miles of the Canary Islands. Precisely because of the uncertain state of the ship, the Canary Island authorities refused permission for it to be brought into harbour there.

Ecologista en Acción are concerned that Motril might not have the facilities to handle this kind of cargo and that there might be a possible leak into the port waters.
