Irresponsible Shoe Craze

NRJ Rio Chillar ShoesThousands of discarded shoes have been cleared out of Río Chillar in Nerja – hikers round off their river walk by hanging them off an overhead electricity cable.

Quite apart from the fact that the area of natural beauty really doesn’t deserve to be turned into a shoe dump, the idea of throwing up a pair of shoes, tied together by their laces, up onto a electric cable so that they will wind around it and just hang there, is tremendously irresponsible.

There were so many pairs of shoes hanging in this fashion that the cable was being put under strain especially in windy conditions, so the Town Hall decided to act and send a crew in with a lorry to remove them all.

This has been the second clean up so far this year, which is mind boggling because you would suppose that the sort of person that finds such a natural spot attractive and a pleasure to behold, would not be the sort of person to litter the place with rubbish, drink cans and… old pairs of shoes.

Accordingly, the Town Hall calls upon hikers to desist from the craze of discarding walking shoes in this manner, as well as not to litter the place up with the wrappings etc of their picnic lunches up there.

In the meantime, the Town Council has another clean up lined up for September, at the end of the summer hiking season.
