AXA Convento Velez MalagaA man carried out a molotov-cocktail attack on the idol of the Virgen de los Desamparados in a convent in Vélez-Málaga at the beginning of May.

Fortunately, his incendiary bomb skills were lacking so the attack turned into a bottle attack on this religious idol from the XVII Century, resulting its clothes ending up stained with petrol.

The 44-year-old man was arrested at home the next day. The police searched dwelling in Torre de Mar and found more ‘ammunition.’

The charges against the man are: a crime against the Freedom of Thought, Freedom of Religious Expression, and Damages.

AXA Molotov VirginThe Friar of the Covento de San Francisco, Vélez-Málaga, where the image is kept, contacted the police to report the incident, explaining what had happened. The police began investigating and very soon identified the suspect, who is said to have mental issues.

As a consequence of this attack, the six Semana Santa brotherhoods that use the convent to keep their procession idols are discussing the adoption of security measures such as CCTV inside the convent and glass screens in front of the idols.
