Granada Protest March

and-health-protest-march-onlA Huge crowd gathered in central Granada on Sunday the 16th to protest over the state of the capital’s hospitals. According to official figures the crowd numbered 40,000 protestors.

The root of the problems appear to be the reorganization of the city’s hospitals, which was carried out in July this year, and centres upon the problems in the new hospital, Campus de la Salud.

The health-workers’ unions and the medical staff, themselves headed the protest. Their demands are that the city should count on two complete, fully functioning hospitals in Granada; not just one.

The protestors set off from the old Hospital San Cecilio with the front rank carrying the banner, “For a Dignified Health System.” From there, they wound their way around the centre of the city, passing in front of the Fuente de las Batallas, where a manifesto was read out.

The protest was backed by social and health associations, workers’ unions and some political parties.

The Junta de Andalucia, in response, via their provincial delegate, Higinio Almagro, says that it respects the “democratic expression” of the protestors and assures that the Regional Government is aware of the existing feelings in the Province of Granada concerning the new health-system arrangements.

Furthermore, he announced that the Junta is convinced that the public, health system in Granada is in the hands of the best professionals, using the best technology to date.

However, he insists that going backwards is not the answer, that the new hospital arrangement is the fairest one for people of Granada and he also insists that there has been no loss of service. He went further to claim that the facilities were the best in Europe.
