ALM Vagina Monologues OnLThe Vagina Monologues were written by Eve Ensler in the 1990’s. Every year in February, she allows groups all over the world to perform them copyright free with all proceeds of the performances going to women’s causes.

On February 25th a group of women from the Almunécar International Women’s Group held a reading of The Vagina Monologues at the Centro Social Paquita Ruiz as part of these world wide events. We raised €135 for the Mujeres en Solidaridad con Madres Solas, Marisa Sendon – a group who support women and children in Almuñécar.

The performance is a moving and political exploration of women’s experience of their own bodies and their sexuality. The Vagina Monologues are the recorded words (based on interviews made by Eve Ensler) of women telling the truth about their lives – speaking the unspeakable and naming the un-namable. It is funny, poignant, sad, disturbing, heartening and a celebration of women’s experience.

Many of the ten readers had not heard the Monologues performed before, or had only seen a performance many years ago. The parts were allocated but each reader only saw her own part until the day of the performance. For the readers too it was an emotional journey.

As a member of the audience wrote afterwards:

“I just wanted to congratulate you on your performances yesterday – I think it was a great triumph and very well done – It was a shame you didn’t have a bigger audience, but I think I can say that those of us who were there were very appreciative.

I myself had no idea what to expect and to be honest wasn’t that sure about sitting listening to people reading. I should have known better!

It was funny, it was sad, very moving in parts, shocking and informative – all in all, I was glad I took the time out to come along. Well done to everyone, I think you did a great job.”

The group want to present the Monologues next year, so if you missed it, make a date in your diary for next February if you want to read or to be involved in the performance.
