Royal British Legion

When I looked around the Plaza de España on Sunday at the many and varied stalls, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the organisation and effort that must go into Residents Day. There were stalls for charities, newspapers, golf societies, clubs and many many more. The RBL Nerja branch had a tombola stall with lots of lovely donations from many people and businesses and we thank them all for their generosity. It is, as always, much appreciated.

Our thanks must go especially to Dorothy and David Allen who work so tirelessly for the branch throughout the year. I will forever picture Dorothy sitting at night rolling up the tickets for the tombola and sticking them into the straws ready for the day. It beats television, I guess. Many of you who attended the event will recognise Dorothy, who not only puts her heart and soul into raising money for the Legion, but also dresses the part.

Events like this always take a lot of time and effort, but our stall looked superb at the beginning of the day, thanks to all the helpers, and to all those who bought tickets and helped us raise over €350, which will help to swell our Poppy Appeal collection. We actually had an empty stall at the end of the day!

As you can see from the photo below our regular monthly lunches at Restaurante Peña Parda (1st Friday of the month) are most enjoyable and we always look forward to new people coming along, so if you would like to join us there please contact Eleanor eleanorbennett@hotmail.com or Dave on 654 085 811 or email dgdeepblue@gmail.com.

We also meet at the Al Andalus hotel in Maro on the 3rd Thursday of the month, and to join us there please contact Marilyn on adamsnerja@yahoo.co.uk. You don’t have to be ex-service, and you will find us to be a friendly and welcoming group.

The Chapel Bar in Nerja is holding a tombola and games day next Sunday (21st April) in aid of the RBL. They also do sterling work for us – Thank you Ian and Isabel.

There is a large group of “legionnaires” going off to Portugal for five days this month, about 50 in fact. They will be a happy bunch of travellers and I hope they have a great time, and bring back lots of pictures – more about that next month.
