Pyromaniac Targets Cerro Gordo

The Guardia Civil is going all out to track down the culprit behind four deliberate fires on Cerro Gordo; one of the few pine forests left on the Costa del Sol.

This natural-park area has suffered four fires in only ten days, which is indicative enough that ‘somebody’ rather than ‘something’ is behind it. Guardia Civil units from Nerja and Almuñécar are acting both as a deterrent, as well as trying to catch whoever is behind it.

Quite apart from the suspicious frequency of the fires, there are no high-tension lines in the area that could be causing sparks. Neither is there farm land where an irresponsible land owner might be burning cuttings – another frequent cause of fire in the countryside. Finally, each of the fires has started around five in the afternoon.

The last in the series of fires, which occurred on Sunday the 17th, had four separate starting points, and if it were not for the rapid intervention of Infoca and local fire services, would have devastated the area.

Quite apart from the huge ecological loss, the residents of Urbanizacion el Nogal are at risk, along with their homes.

Apart from the Guardia Civil and Policia Local, the forest-fire unit, Infoca, have left a small team in the area to help catch the culprit.
